ESECH Lab (Electronic Systems for Environment and Cultural Heritage Laboratory)

The ESECH Lab, formerly known as the TCH Lab (Technologies for Cultural Heritage Lab), was founded in 2001 by Professor Carlo Atzeni, then Director of the Department of Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering.

In the early 2000s, the laboratory pioneered the development of GBSAR (Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar), a radar technology that applies the principles of spaceborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometry from a ground-based platform.

Over more than two decades of research and development, GBSAR systems have become established tools for geotechnical monitoring applications, including quarries, open-pit mines, landslides, and buildings. Today, several companies worldwide manufacture GBSAR systems or provide monitoring services based on this technology.

The laboratory’s current research activities focus on the development of radar systems and other sensors mounted on drones and mobile platforms for the monitoring of land, structures, and critical infrastructure.
